  • A Breath of Spring Air

I did not change the winter tyres for my bike in January because it seemed I don’t need them at all. This week the snow begun to melt and there was +3 to +7°C degrees in the daytime and –1°C during the nights. The road conditions in the city area were ok, but when I hit the rural roads to find some owls in the dark, I was a bit…

  • Woodpeckers

The feeling when you bicycle a long distance and manage to see good year ticks is just incredible. You are so proud of yourself, tired but happy. It has been windy and lots of snow has come from the sky, but on Friday I had some time for birding. I went looking for White-backed Woodpeckers and Three-toed Woodpeckers at traditional woodpecker spots in Lahti. On my way I found a…

I spent some time in the home village and saw no new birds to the year list. I saw the nuthatch once though. This time couple of minutes and it was gone. No pics. Today I saw…

  • Heart of the winter

Last week I had slightly better luck. On friday I had a day off and cycled 22 kilometres in the countryside. The sun was shining but it was rather windy. It was beautiful day but no birds anywhere – total emptiness. My strategy this year has been simple – spend no time at the “eBird” (tiira.fi) and find your own spontaneous birds at good birding spots. I did find Black…
