Geese

There were some arctic bird migration during the week. On tuesday 7th of May there were some long-tailed ducks and Common Scoters on the lake Vesijärvi. I also found one Arctic Tern and the following day three of them. Arctic tern is not easy in the lakes so these were pretty good sightings.

I also saw three White-Backed Woodpeckers (third and fourth sighting for the year) and found a Black Redstart again (my tenth spontaneous territory in this area).

It rained heavily two days and the rivers started to flood again. Some waders came to my patch – Wood Sandpipers, Spotted Redhanks, Ruffs and some Temminck’s Stints. Atfter the rainy and foggy days the winds turned to blow from South-West and on Sunday 12th of May Barnacle Geese migrated cross the country. I saw around 1500 birds during two hours in my patch but they went too far from South. The geese dissapeared from my patch at the same day.

Viime viikolla nähtiin jonkin verran arktikaa. Tiistaina 7.5. Vesijärvelle oli saapunut vesilintuja, muun muassa alleja ja mustalintuja. Löysin samana päivänä parin sadan kalatiiran parvesta lapintiiran ja seuraavana päivänä kolme yksilöä. Lapintiira on aika hankala laji järvillä ja niitä näkee parhaiten toukokuussa. Tiiraparvi jatkoi muuttoaan parin päivän päästä – ihan hyvä ajoitus.

Näin myös rantoja kiertelevän valkoselkätikan ja kohta perään pariskunnan (kolmas ja neljäs spontaani havainto tälle vuodelle).

Loppuviikon sateiden jälkeen joet alkoivat jälleen tulvia. Kotikulmillekin saapui liroja, mustavikloja, suokukkoja ja muutama lapinsirrikin. Sateisten kelien jälkeen tuuli kääntyi lounaaseen ja valkoposkihanhet aloittivat muutonsa. Näin noin 1500 hanhea parin tunnin aikana, mutta linnut menivät pääosin liian kaukaa etelästä. Paikalliset tundra- ja metsähanhet taisivat lähteä pelloilta samana päivänä.
