The first longer bike trip

The weather has been sunny and the snow is gone. The floods have been typical although there was plenty of snow in winter. It hasn’t rained for ages and the floods start to vanish.

Last week I finally had time for birdwatching. On Monday morning 15th of April I went to look for the Rook once again in the Kujala area. I found one right away and continued straight to work. What a relief!

On wednesday morning I went to Lake Vesijärvi. The lake was still covered with ice, but there was a small open water area. I got five new year ticks – common species.

On Thursday I started the day with watching the bird migration for two hours at Renkomäki hill – no new birds.

On Friday I woke up 04.30 and went to my patch looking for Pygmy Owl – no owls. The geese had come back in my patch so I went to scan them carefully. I found one Pink-footed Goose after two hours of scanning. It was cold morning and I was freezing but I was so glad of finding this difficult species.

On Saturday I left for the first longer trip of the year, a 30 km ride to Orimattila, Ruha – Pukkila, Kantele area – one of the best birding sites in Southern Finland. I woke up at 3.00 Am and rode slowly in the full moon light. It was was very quiet with no traffic at all because of Eastern. Robins were singing in the darkness. I tried to listen to owls, especially the Pygmy Owl when the sun started to rise but heard none – what a surprise. I think I have to save my Pygmy Owl sightings to October.

The mornings at Ruha rural area are always fantastic. The light is so beautiful that it could be good idea to come here more often just to see the sunrise. The light changes quickly so it’s good to go straight watching the birds at the flood. I just had to take some photos first because of the incredible light. After 9.00 it was hard to identify the birds by the flood.

I found nine new year ticks during the day. Gadwall was the best of them and the first one beyond my ”200 easisest” list. Wohoo! Garganey was also very good find. Tundra Swan was a big disappointment. Actually there were Swans at all. Normally there are hundreds of them. Maybe they have all gone to their nesting sites despite the ice cover at the lakes. Tundra Swan can also be one species that I have to get in the autumn. Actually I have never seen Tundra Swan spontaneously in autumn. I have to keep eye on the migrating Swans.

On my way back home there was a headwind. The battery of the bike was running low and I had to ride with ”Eco”. I had plenty of gear and the bike was heavy. It was tough! In Orimattila I saw Eurasian Collared Dove but I don’t count that as spontanious. The same birds have been there whole winter.

Sää oli viime viikolla aurinkoinen ja lumet saivat kyytiä. Tulvat ovat olleet melko tyypillisiä vaikka talvella oli paljon lunta. Ei ole satanut aikoihin ja tulvat alkavat hiljalleen kuivua.

Viime viikolla pääsin vihdoin retkeilemään. Maanantaiaamuna 15.4. ajoin jälleen Kujalan kautta töihin. Löysin mustavariksen varisten joukosta aika helposti. Jatkoin saman tien töihin huojentuneena.

Keskiviikkoaamuna käväisin Vesijärvellä Polttimon sulapaikalla. Sain hetkessä viisi uutta vuodenpinnaa – peruslajeja.

Torstaina staijasin aamumuuttoa pari tuntia. Oli hieman liian tyyntä ja muutto oli vaisua.

Perjantaina heräsin klo 4.30 ja menin kotikulmille etsimään varpuspöllöä. En löytänyt. Hanhia oli saapunut lähipelloille, joten lähdin selaamaan parvia kaukoputkella. Parin tunnin huolellisen selaamisen jälkeen löysin kuin löysinkin lyhytnokkahanhen. Aamu oli kylmä ja oli jo aivan jäässä kun palasin kotiin aamupalalle.

Lauantaina lähdin vuoden ensimmäiselle pitemmälle pyöräretkelle. Ajoin 30 km matkan orimattilan Ruhan – Pukkilan Kanteleen alueelle. Päivän aikana ajoa kertyi noin 80 km. Heräsin jo klo 3.00 yöllä ja lähdin hissukseen ajelemaan kohti etelää. Nähdään pian! kuuntelin pöllöjä tyynessä ja lämpimässä kevätyössä. Vain punarinnat lauloivat, eikä maantiellä ollut juuri liikennettä koska oli pääsiäinen. Varpuspöllö taitaa kyllä jäädä syksylle. Syksyn vaelluksen aikaan ne tuntuvat vastaavan paremmin atrappiin.

Aamun hetket Ruhan–Kurunkulman alueella ovat kyllä mahtavia ja valo on lähes aina ihanteellinen kaikenlaiseen kuvaukseen. Varhainen aamu on myös parasta aikaa katsella tulvalle, sillä väreily on jo klo 9 aikaan niin voimakasta, että lintuja ei voi määrittää.

Sain päivän aikana yhdeksän vuodenpinnaa. Parhaina lajeina harmaasorsa ja heinätavi. Harmaasorsa oli ensimmäinen vuodenpinna tänä vuonna joka ei ole ”200 helpointa lajia” -listallani. Jihuu! Pikkujoutsen oli päivän pahin pettymys. Itse asiassa joutsenia ei ollut alueella ollenkaan. Voi olla että tämäkin laji jää syksylle. En ole vain koskaan nähnyt pikkujoutsenta syksyllä spontaanisti. Täytyy siis katsella joutsenten muuttoparvet tarkkaan.

Paluumatkalla näin Orimattilan keskustassa turkinkyyhkyn, mutta en laske sitä spontaaniksi havainnoksi, sillä linnut ovat olleet alueella koko talven. Matka oli rankka sillä oli vastatuuli ja olin pakannutt mukaan aika paljon tavaraa. Jouduin säästelemään sähköpyörän akkua ja ajamaan ”Eco”-tasolla tai ilman avustusta.
